Geosciences

Welcome to the Geosciences Department!

What is geoscience?

Geoscience is the study of the Earth and all of its systems. Interactions between the solid earth, the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere continually reshape the planet. Geoscientists investigate these interactions using interdisciplinary approaches to address questions related to how the Earth formed, how it evolved over geologic time, and how its continued evolution affects the environment in which we live.

What does geosciences look like at Wellesley?

At Wellesley, the Geosciences department offers a wide range of courses and research opportunities. Our courses examine earth, ocean, climate, and space processes and are often cross-listed with other STEM departments like Environmental Studies, Astronomy, and Chemistry. The research done by the faculty also demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of the geosciences and involve systems ranging from EPA SuperFund sites to lake sediments to Antarctic glaciers to the rocks of New York City. Learn more about faculty research on theGEOS in the News page. For more information on courses, research opportunities, and major/minor requirements, we encourage you to take a look through the rest of this site!

The department is actively working on editing the website to promote ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion as part of a larger push towards inclusive excellence in the Geosciences department at Wellesley, so parts of this website may be out of date as we work towards updating it.
